Aeropress Recipes

The Aeropress is an unbelievably versatile coffee maker, a toy with almost unlimited possibilities. The standard Aeropress recipe is one of our favorite recipes because it is so simple and works well in hotel rooms or on the road, even if you don't have a kettle but only a pot to boil water in or have to order hot water from room service. Below, we've also added a variation for the «Inverted Bypass Method», which is one of our favorite ways to prepare coffee using an Aeropress.

We don't rinse the paper filter in this recipe, as it seem to have very little to no impact on the final cup and we want to keep this recipe as simple as possible. Below, you'll also find a version with an inverted Aeropress.

extraction time: 3:00
ground coffee: 15g
water at 95°c: 270g
coffee-water ratio: 1:18

  1. Grind 15g of specialty coffee at a grind setting somewhere between V60 and espresso, but closer to V60, perhaps 16 clicks on the Comandante.
  2. Put the paper filter into the filter cap, screw this onto the Aeropress, add your coffee and place the Aeropress on a cup.
  3. Start a timer, pour 270g of water onto your coffee and put the plunger into the Aeropress to create a vacuum without pressing it down yet. It's fine if your water is a little hotter, as long as it's not all boiling and bubbling.
  4. After 2 minutes, swirl the Aeropress in order to create turbulence within.
  5. After 30 more seconds, start to press down and try to be done within 30 seconds. Don't even worry about the hissing sound at the end, you can press until all the water went through.

Feel free to dilute your coffee with a little more warm/hot water or with cold water and ice.

Aeropress Inverted

The Aeropress is an unbelievably versatile coffee maker, a toy with almost unlimited possibilities. This is one of our favorite recipes, using the «Inverted Bypass Method».

extraction time: 1:30
ground coffee: 24g (coarser than espresso, finer than V60)
water at 93°c: 100g
water at 85°c: 100g
coffee-water ratio: 1:8.3

  1. Grind 24g of specialty coffee at a grind setting somewhere between V60 and espresso, but closer to V60.
  2. Rinse the paper filter and the Aeropress with hot water.
  3. Invert the Aeropress with the plunger about ⅓ in and add your coffee.
  4. Start a timer and pour 100g of water at 93°C and gently stir a couple of times.
  5. After 45s, screw on the filter cap with the paper filter inside, push out the remaining air and flip onto a cup.
  6. Press all the coffee into the cup when the timer hits 60s. Try to finish at 90s.
  7. Dilute with 100g of water at 85°C or with cold water and ice.

As always, we recommend to experiment and try as many different variations of this recipe as you can think of (as well as completely different recipes). There are lots of websites and blogs our there with Aeropress recipes, one of our favorites is AeroPrecipe.
